Volunteer Visa Thailand 2026: How to Stay Legal

How to volunteer legally in Thailand: which organisations qualify, required documents, and the visa duration options based on your stay length.

Thailand doesn’t have a dedicated “volunteer visa” category. Instead, volunteers use the Non-Immigrant O visa, the same category used for retirement and marriage visas, adapted to a volunteer sponsorship basis.

Tourist visa or Non-Immigrant O? Choosing the right route

Which route you need depends entirely on how long you’re volunteering. The figures below reflect the current 60-day visa exemption. The Thai Cabinet approved dropping this to 30 days in May 2026 (pending official publication), which would shift these thresholds, so confirm the current rule before you rely on the exemption route:

  • Under 30 days: Visa exemption is generally sufficient
  • 30–60 days: A tourist visa with extension typically covers this
  • 60–90 days: Tourist visa plus extension, or a Non-Immigrant O if your situation calls for it
  • 90+ days: A Non-Immigrant O is required

Which organisations qualify?

Your sponsoring organisation must be a Thai-registered NGO, foundation, association, or state enterprise. Unregistered grassroots projects, however well-intentioned, cannot sponsor a Non-Immigrant O volunteer visa. A legitimate organisation should be able to provide registration numbers and certificates without hesitation.

Documents required

  • Passport valid for at least 6 months
  • Passport-style photographs
  • Proof of funds: minimum 20,000 THB
  • An official sponsorship letter from your organisation, with registration certificates attached

The 90-day stay and extension process

The Non-Immigrant O grants 90 days per entry. Extensions require additional documentation from your organisation and a fee of 1,900 THB per application.

A note on orphanage volunteering

Orphanage volunteering exists in a particularly complex legal and ethical context. Verifying an organisation’s legitimacy matters more here than almost anywhere else in the volunteering space. We strongly recommend thorough due diligence on any organisation in this category before committing.

Frequently asked questions

What’s the difference between this and your general volunteer visa guide? This page focuses on the specific document requirements and duration tiers; see our full Non-O volunteer visa guide for the broader process and eligibility picture.

Can I volunteer short-term without any of this? For trips under a few weeks, many people use a standard tourist entry. See our honest answer on tourist-visa volunteering for the real risk picture at different durations.

What if my organisation can’t provide a registration certificate? That’s a strong signal to look for a different organisation, or to consider whether a different visa category (like the DTV, if you have qualifying foreign income) might fit your situation better.
