ED Visa Benefits

Why the Education Visa works for long-term stays

The ED visa is one of the most accessible long-stay options, particularly popular for Thai language study and Muay Thai training in Chiang Mai.

Accessible entry point

No income or savings thresholds. Enrolment in an approved program is the primary requirement, making it easier to qualify than financial-based visas.

Renewable term by term

Each 90-day extension matches your school term. As long as you stay enrolled and attend, the visa continues.

Wide range of programs

Thai language schools, universities, Muay Thai academies, cooking schools, and other MOE-registered programs all qualify.

Family-friendly

Dependants can apply for a Non-Immigrant O visa based on your ED enrolment, keeping the whole family in one place.

Local immersion

Living in Chiang Mai while studying Thai or training provides full cultural immersion, far more effective than short tourist visits.

Pathway to other visas

An ED stay gives you time to establish a Thai bank account and build the financial history that supports a future DTV or retirement visa application.

Who qualifies for the ED visa

The core requirement is enrolment in an MOE-registered school or program in Thailand. There are no age restrictions and no meaningful financial threshold. Enrolment is the qualifying factor.

Your school must be registered with the Thai Ministry of Education. The two paths below cover every program type we see; they carry different paperwork and different fraud risk, so it's worth knowing which one you're on before you enrol anywhere.

Academic Enrolment

Thai language schools · Chiang Mai University & other accredited universities

Lower fraud risk: established institutions have standard MOE registration and a track record with immigration. University enrolment additionally needs transcripts and tuition proof (see the Requirements tab).

Soft-Power Programs

Muay Thai academies · Thai cooking schools · yoga, meditation & wellness programs

Verify MOE registration carefully before you pay. This is where most rejected applications come from. We only refer schools we've personally verified as properly registered.

We work with a selection of approved schools in Chiang Mai and can refer you based on your goals and schedule.

Expert Insight

The most common ED visa mistake is choosing a school that isn't properly registered with the MOE. We only refer schools we've verified. Don't assume any school offering 'visa support' is officially approved.
