Who qualifies for the ED visa
The core requirement is enrolment in an MOE-registered school or program in Thailand. There are no age restrictions and no meaningful financial threshold. Enrolment is the qualifying factor.
Your school must be registered with the Thai Ministry of Education. The two paths below cover every program type we see; they carry different paperwork and different fraud risk, so it's worth knowing which one you're on before you enrol anywhere.
Academic Enrolment

Lower fraud risk: established institutions have standard MOE registration and a track record with immigration. University enrolment additionally needs transcripts and tuition proof (see the Requirements tab).

Verify MOE registration carefully before you pay. This is where most rejected applications come from. We only refer schools we've personally verified as properly registered.

Immigration takes ED visa attendance seriously. You are expected to attend classes regularly: schools track attendance and immigration can conduct spot checks.
Universities and language schools track attendance through standard registrar/administrative records. Muay Thai academies, cooking schools, and wellness programs report attendance directly to immigration themselves. Ask your school how they handle this before you enrol.
Consistent non-attendance is grounds for visa cancellation. We advise all ED clients to treat their school schedule seriously, not as a formality.
If you are already in Thailand on a tourist visa or visa exemption, you can apply for the ED visa at Chiang Mai immigration once you have enrolment confirmation from an approved school. This is the most common path for our clients.

- Proof of funds: Thai immigration requires evidence of approximately 20,000 THB in accessible funds, a standard entry requirement for all visa types, not an ED-specific financial test

This is the single document worth verifying before you enrol anywhere, not after. It's the most common reason ED applications get rejected. We confirm a school's registration is genuine before we ever refer you to it.

What you can & can't do
No. The Education Visa does not permit employment of any kind in Thailand. If you want to work while in Thailand, you need a Non-Immigrant B visa and a work permit.
Yes, but you need a re-entry permit before leaving to preserve your visa status. Without one, your visa is cancelled when you exit and you must apply again from scratch.
Single and multiple re-entry permits are available at Chiang Mai immigration before your departure.
Yes. If you remain in Thailand for more than 90 consecutive days, you must file a 90-day report. Most ED students need to do this at least once per school term.
Your school is required to notify immigration if you stop attending. Immigration can then revoke your visa status. Consistent attendance is a legal requirement, not optional.
