Volunteer Visa Benefits
Legal long-term stay for volunteers in Chiang Mai
Chiang Mai has a large and active NGO community. The Non-Immigrant O volunteer visa is the correct legal pathway for long-term volunteer placements.
Legal long-term stay
Volunteer in Chiang Mai for months or years without tourist visa restrictions or border runs.
No work permit required
Unpaid volunteering under the Non-Immigrant O does not require a Thai work permit, unlike paid employment.
No financial threshold
No minimum bank balance or income requirement: your volunteer placement letter is the key document.
Renewable placement
Extensions tied to your volunteer organisation: as long as your placement continues, so does your visa eligibility.
Active NGO community
Chiang Mai has one of the largest concentrations of NGOs and non-profits in Southeast Asia, spanning elephant welfare, education, hill tribe support, and more.
Personal fulfilment
A legal, structured way to contribute long-term, without the constant visa stress that comes with repeated tourist entries.
Learn More About the Volunteer Visa
Everything you need to know about qualifying organisations, documents, and what the Non-O volunteer visa does and doesn't cover.
Who qualifies for the volunteer visa
The primary requirement is a confirmed volunteer placement with a registered Thai non-profit or NGO. One disqualifier up front: current Thailand Elite (Privilege) Visa holders aren't eligible to convert to this visa type. See the Restrictions tab for details.
Haven't Found an Organisation Yet?
If you're volunteering informally, or aren't sure whether your group counts as a registered organisation, message us before you assume you don't qualify. We'll check your specific situation, or point you toward a registered organisation that fits your interests.
Your host organisation must be:
- Registered as a non-profit, foundation, or NGO under Thai law
- Registered with the Thai Ministry of Interior or an equivalent regulatory body
- Able to provide official documentation of your placement and the organisation's registration status
Commercial companies, social enterprises, and unregistered community groups do not qualify. We verify organisation eligibility before starting any application.
You must be performing genuine unpaid voluntary work for the organisation. The work should align with the organisation's registered charitable purpose.
Roles that involve business development, revenue generation, or activities outside the NGO's stated mission may not qualify. We'll review your specific situation.
You cannot receive a salary or wage from your Thai organisation on a volunteer visa. Genuine unpaid volunteerism is the requirement.
Reasonable expense reimbursement (accommodation, food, transport) may be acceptable in some cases; we advise on this based on your specific arrangement.
Expert Insight
The most common issue is organisations that are not properly registered with Thai authorities. Many well-meaning groups operate informally. We check registration status before starting any application: an unregistered organisation means a rejected visa.
Documents you'll need
The key documents come from your organisation. We prepare and check everything before submission.
- Passport valid for at least 12 months with blank visa pages
- Recent passport-style photographs
- Completed Non-Immigrant O application form
- Proof of current visa status
Proof of Funds
Thai immigration requires evidence of approximately 20,000 THB in accessible funds. This is a standard entry requirement for all visa types, not a volunteer-specific financial threshold. It's still real money you'll need on hand, so don't skip it just because this visa has no other financial gate.
- Official volunteer placement letter on organisation letterhead, confirming your role, start date, and unpaid status
- Copy of the organisation's Thai registration certificate
- Organisation's registration number and official address
- In some cases: a letter of support from the Ministry of Interior or relevant government body
Expert Insight
The placement letter needs to say the right things: specific language around the unpaid nature of the role and the organisation's registration status. We review every letter before it goes to immigration.

Volunteer visa vs. staying on a tourist visa
Already volunteering on a tourist visa or border runs? Here's what actually changes if you convert to the Non-O.
Tourist Visa / Border Runs
- 60–90 days per entry, then a visa run or renewal
- No legal basis for the volunteer work itself
- Recurring flights or land-border trips to reset your stay
- No 90-day reporting, but also no long-term stability
Non-O Volunteer Visa
- 90 days per extension, renewable up to a year, with no border runs
- Your volunteer work has an actual legal basis
- One 1,900 THB extension every 90 days instead of a flight or border crossing
- 90-day immigration reports required, but no forced departures
Chiang Mai's NGO sector is large, active, and welcoming to skilled foreign volunteers. The Non-O is what lets you commit to that work without the constant visa-run cycle.
What you can & can't do
No. The volunteer visa is for unpaid work only. Receiving a salary or wage from a Thai organisation without a work permit is a visa violation. If your role transitions to paid employment, you need a Non-Immigrant B visa and a work permit.
Yes. If you currently hold a Thailand Elite Visa (now the Thailand Privilege Card), you are not eligible to apply for or convert to the volunteer Non-Immigrant O visa. The two programmes are incompatible: Elite/Privilege card holders remain within that scheme for the duration of their membership.
If your Thailand Elite or Privilege Card membership has ended and you are considering a volunteer placement, contact us to discuss your situation. The rules around prior Elite membership and eligibility for standard non-immigrant categories can be nuanced.
If your volunteer placement ends, your visa basis no longer applies. You must transition to another visa category or depart Thailand. Contact us as soon as you know so we can plan your next steps.
Yes. If you stay in Thailand for more than 90 consecutive days without exiting, you must file a 90-day report. Most long-term volunteers need to do this regularly.
Yes, with a re-entry permit obtained before departure. Without one, your visa is cancelled on exit. Single re-entry permits cost 1,000 THB; multiple re-entry permits cost 3,800 THB.
