Guardian Visa Thailand: Who Qualifies & How to Apply
Guardian visa Thailand requirements: who qualifies, the financial threshold, school enrolment rules, and the step-by-step application process.
The guardian visa lets a parent or legal guardian live in Thailand to support a child enrolled in school here. Here’s who qualifies and exactly how the application works.
What is the guardian visa Thailand?
A Non-Immigrant O visa category for parents or legal guardians of a child enrolled at a recognised school in Thailand, allowing the guardian to remain in the country to support the child during their studies.
Who qualifies for the guardian visa Thailand?
Parents of students at Thai schools
You’re the legal parent of a child currently enrolled and attending a recognised school in Thailand.
Legal guardians
If you’re not the child’s parent but hold legal guardianship, you can qualify on the same basis with documentation proving that legal relationship.
Age of child
The child must be under 20 years old.
One guardian per child (generally)
Typically one guardian visa is issued per child, though specific circumstances vary. We advise on family-specific situations during your consultation.
Guardian visa Thailand requirements
A financial threshold of 500,000 THB held in a Thai bank account, or monthly income of 40,000 THB, is required alongside the child’s school enrolment.
Bank seasoning rules
Your first extension requires the funds seasoned for 2 months; renewals require 3 months, the same pattern as the retirement and marriage visa categories.
How to apply: step by step
Step 1: enter Thailand on a Non-Immigrant “O” visa
Begin your application process on the correct visa category.
Step 2: enrol your child in a recognised school
The school must be properly accredited. See below for what this means in practice.
Step 3: open a Thai bank account
Deposit and season the required funds ahead of your application.
Step 4: apply for the 1-year extension at Thai immigration
Initial entry is for 90 days, extended to a full 1-year permit once your documentation is complete.
Step 5: 90-day reporting
Once approved, you’ll need to file regular 90-day reports for as long as you remain in Thailand continuously.
Can you work on a guardian visa?
No. The guardian visa does not include work authorisation. Employment requires a separate Non-Immigrant B visa and work permit, the same restriction that applies to the retirement visa.

Guardian visa application path
Embassy visa fee runs approximately 2,000–3,000 THB equivalent, with an annual extension fee of 1,900 THB thereafter.
School enrolment: what “accredited” actually means
The school needs to be properly registered with Thai education authorities. Not every school offering “international” branding meets the standard immigration expects. We verify a school’s status before any application begins.
90-day reporting and TM.30 obligations
Beyond the standard 90-day report, your address registration (TM.30) needs to stay current. Your landlord is responsible for filing this when you move in, but it’s worth confirming it’s been done correctly.
What happens when your child leaves school or graduates?
Once your child graduates, changes to a non-qualifying school, or stops attending, your guardian visa basis no longer applies. You’ll need to transition to a different visa category. Contact us as early as possible to plan ahead.
Frequently asked questions
Is the financial threshold the same as the marriage visa? No. The guardian visa requires 500,000 THB (or 40,000 THB monthly income), higher than the marriage visa’s 400,000 THB threshold, though still lower than the 800,000 THB required for the retirement visa.
What’s the 90-day report fine for non-compliance? 2,000 THB if you fail to file on time. We handle this for ongoing clients to avoid the issue entirely.
Can both parents get guardian visas for the same child? This varies by case and immigration office. See our full guardian visa guide or contact us to discuss your family’s specific situation.
